Biometric system to monitor attendance at student hostels

A new biometric system designed to monitor the student’s attendance and times of entry an exit will be deployed at the hostels pertaining to the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) in India, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

The MIT campus houses engineering and management students in about 26 hostels. Of these, 16 are for boys and the rest for girls, comprising a total of about 7,800 students. About 3,000 of the students are girls.

“The new system has been mulled because currently students have to sign the register as they enter the hostel after the deadline and if anyone is absent, the caretakers/wardens go for physical verification for cross-checking if he or she present or not. It consumes more time and requires a huge workforce,” explained Col. CMS Kalakoti, chief warden of MIT.

The deadline for the first-year students is 9.30 pm and for others, 10.30 pm. Soon after the deadline is over, authorities check the register and conduct first verification soon after the deadline and the second time again at 12 am. “By the time we conduct our second check on missing students, it would be well past midnight,” said the chief warden, adding how difficult it is in some eight hostels that house more than 700 students.

The biometric system of attendance will make the data available a few minutes after the deadline, making it easy for the hostel authorities to track absentees. “It will avoid physical verification, save time and inform the absentees too,” he added.
