Close to 50% of recent graduates are employed in non-graduate roles, ONS report reveals
Almost half of the recent university graduates in the UK are currently employed in non-graduate jobs, a new report by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) has recently revealed, up from just 38% around 5 years ago.
Nevertheless, the survey has also found that, in 2013, graduates (defined as all those with a qualification above A level standard),were more likely to be employed, less likely to be searching for work and less likely to be out of the labour force (inactive) than those people with lower qualifications or no qualifications.
The ONS also said that the percentage of graduates working in non-graduate roles has risen, particularly since the 2008/09 recession, suggesting that the increasing supply of graduates and the possible decrease in demand for them has had an effect on the type of job they are doing.
Based on the nature of the studies, graduates with a degree in medicine or dentistry had the highest employment rate of all graduates, at 95%, followed by those with media and information studies, at 93%. However, rates of pay were quite different, with medical graduates reaching the highest median pay of £45,000 a year, while media and information studies graduates had the lowest pay (£21,000) of all subject groups.
