However, it also revealed that almost half of businesses surveyed for the report said that they have staff with skills and qualifications that are beyond those required, meaning there are an estimated 4.3 million workers whose skills are not fully used.

To remedy this and ensure skills shortages do not derail the UK’s future economy UKCES has urged employers and universities to collaborate more on skills and training.

The report ‘Forging Futures’ found that both employers and universities benefit from improved collaboration. Employers are able to access fresh talent, ensure better productivity and gain a competitive edge in the UK and internationally, while universities are better equipped to provide relevant and up-to-date courses and improved employment prospects for their students.
