Firms looking at bolstering productivity in response to the Living Wage
The majority of employers are looking to bolster productivity as a response to the introduction of the Living Wage next month, a recent statistical report has been able to suggest.
The survey of 191 employers by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) found that 40 percent will take no action, with a further 10 percent saying they don’t know what their response will be.
A fifth (19 percent) of employers participating in the poll said that they will invest in training or take measures to increase staff productivity, while 14 percent revealed that they would take on fewer staff than planned.
Furthermore, 8 percent will reduce staff overtime and bonuses, while 2 percent will make redundancies. 8 percent of employers are likely to raise the cost of their goods/services.
REC head of policy Kate Shoesmith commented: “It’s encouraging that a fifth of employers are planning to increase productivity, but this is easier said than done. Low-pay sectors such as health and social care are already finding it difficult to attract and retain staff – and there are question marks about how care providers are supposed to meet cost increases.”
