Job insecurity is rising fast in the public sector, study suggests

The level of job insecurity among public sector workers has risen significantly since the mid-2000s, a survey from the Workplace Employment Relations Study (WERS) has revealed.

According to a news report on the matter, by 2011, public sector employees were found to be much more likely to feel their post was under threat with less than half agreeing they felt their job was secure, compared to the previous 2004 findings. In comparison, private sector employees reported similar levels of security to 2004.

Additionally, the proportion of all employees who viewed relations with their workplace managers as good was slightly higher in 2011 (64 per cent) than in 2004 (62 per cent), while the ratio of employees giving positive ratings was higher in the private sector than in the public sector in 2004 (64 per cent versus 57 per cent) and the gap widened in 2011 (67 per cent versus 57 per cent).

The survey also revealed that public sector employees were more likely to say that they never had enough time to get their work done, 48 per cent, compared to 38 per cent in the private sector. The long-hours culture was reported as more prevalent in the private sector, where 42 per cent of employees believe that they have to work long hours to progress compared to 37 per cent in the public sector.
