Job vacancies go up by 8% across the UK, research reveals
The number of available jobs across the UK went up by 8% for the first three months of 2014 compared to Q1 2013, which led to slight drop in the competition for each vacancy, recent online research suggests.
Figures obtained from the totaljobs Barometer also suggest that property and graduate jobs have risen (by 19 and 11%, respectively), while the number of jobs within the educational sector also went up by an impressive 22%.
The catering and hospitality segment has seen a 10% decline in job opportunities over the past year and 15% compared to the last quarter, while the number of jobs in travel, leisure and tourism are also down by 22% compared to the same period last year.
Despite a general increase in job opportunities across the UK and the number of candidates competing for each job dropping slightly, competition for jobs in some sectors remains very strong. The oil, gas and alternative energy sector saw a rise in applications per job of 24%, while applications for jobs in the public sector also remained competitive.
Geographically, job opportunities grew the most in the East Midlands, which reported a 19% increase in jobs compared to this time last year. Sectors which grew the most included customer services and graduate jobs, which increased by 28% and 29% respectively.
