SME manufacturers raise concerns over shortage of skilled and experienced staff
The future business development prospects of small and medium manufacturers might be seriously affected as the shortage of available skilled and experienced engineers and graduates is becoming an increasingly serious challenge for recruiters, new research suggests.
The SME Manufacturing Survey compiled by the MHA, a group of accountancy and business advisory firms, suggests that 65% of manufacturing SMEs have already experienced problems due to the lack of suitably skilled candidates for their openings.
On the bright side, 13% of small and medium enterprises from the manufacturing sector have solid plans to take on more apprentices, while an impressive 64% of respondents are seriously considering this option.
Furthermore, the survey suggested that manufacturing SMEs are also extremely confident about the future, most of them forecasting an increase of more than 10% in their business.
Despite their optimism, SMEs preparing to take on apprentices or hire new staff in permanent positions should only do so after setting up a solid and reliable time and attendance solution, designed to help their HR departments cope with the extra staff.
