Department for Work and Pensions to replace full-time staff with fixed-term contract workers

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) plans to recruit around 3,000 new workers on fixed 18-month contracts after making redundant thousands of full-time employees under a voluntary exit scheme, a news report has been able to reveal.

A total of 3,824 staff opted to voluntarily leave the organisation at the end of June this year, but the DWP said that 2,800 fixed-term appointments would be needed in total over the next year for operations staff to deliver the new programme of reforms.

The organization has come under fire for the decision, with the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union saying that many of the employees who left this summer worked in the areas where the DWP is now recruiting. The union also commented that this approach was further evidence of the “casualisation” of the workforce.
