Services sector records strong growth in employment

The number of new employees in the business and professional services sector grew at its fastest rate for sever years in the past four months, a recent report by the CBI (Confederation of British Industry) was able to reveal.

Furthermore, expectations are high that employment across the sector – which includes accountancy, legal and marketing firms – will continue to grow at an equally fast (if not faster) pace over the next three months, the report said.

The Service Sector Survey is based on a poll of 136 companies in the business and professional services sector, as well as 79 in the consumer services sector.

Optimism about the business situation rose (+31%), as 44% of firms said they were more optimistic than three months ago, whilst 13% said they were less optimistic.

Around two-thirds (63%) of employers within the sector expect to see further growth in the upcoming quarter and 36% do not predict any. A lack of available staff is seen as the main obstacle to expansion, with 45% of companies saying this is the biggest restriction.

Katja Hall, CBI Deputy Director-General, commented on the announcement: “Employing more staff and planning to increase investment are positive steps in the quest for sustainable growth. However, skills shortages mean it is increasingly hard for firms to find and hire the right people. It’s important that business and government address this issue together, to put the economy of the future on the right footing.”
